Tensions ran high in the Tripura assembly on Tuesday as members of the CPI(M) voiced their demand for an apology from Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath. The demand stemmed from Nath's alleged racist remarks directed at Jitendra Chaudhury, the Leader of the Opposition.
The controversy erupted after Monday's session when Nath's comment was perceived as derogatory by Chaudhury and his supporters. Despite Nath's assertion that he harbored no intentions of disparaging the opposition leader's tribe, the matter escalated when CPI(M) MLA Shyamal Chakraborty called for an apology post-Question Hour.
The Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen's reluctance to address the opposition's concerns led to CPI(M) members staging a walkout. Simultaneously, Chaudhury lodged a privilege motion accusing Nath of making racially offensive remarks during a budget discussion, further intensifying the assembly's discord.
