New Canadian PM Stands Strong: Carney's Sovereign Stance on U.S. Relations
New Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, elected on March 9, asserts Canada's sovereignty in setting terms for his first call with U.S. President Donald Trump. Despite Trump's threats of tariffs and annexation remarks, Carney emphasizes respectful dialogue as both leaders navigate early diplomatic interactions.

Newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is making headlines with his firm stance on U.S.-Canada relations. Carney, who automatically became prime minister after being elected leader of the Liberal Party on March 9, has expressed willingness to engage with U.S. President Donald Trump, but insists on maintaining Canada's sovereignty.
Traditionally, leaders of Canada and the United States engage in talks shortly after elections; however, Carney and Trump have yet to converse. In Newfoundland, during a general election campaign, Carney remarked on the independence of discussions, stating, 'We're going to talk on our terms as a sovereign country, not as what he pretends we are.'
Amidst Trump's threats of tariffs and musings about annexing Canada, Carney labels these remarks as disrespectful. He speculates that Trump might be waiting for the election results before initiating any diplomatic conversation. Carney's assertive posture marks a new chapter in U.S.-Canada diplomatic ties.
