In a significant development aiming to ease escalating tensions, Punjab's Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has announced the release of 450 farmers from police detention, according to the Information and Public Relations Department of Punjab. This decision reflects the government's increasing efforts to address farmer grievances.
Inspector General of Police, Sukhchain Singh Gill, stated that the Punjab administration had previously released approximately 800 farmers. The Chief Minister has emphasized releasing vulnerable groups, including women and differently-abled individuals, immediately. This action follows allegations of excessive force against protesting farmers.
In response to concerns over farmers' belongings, authorities have appointed Jasbir Singh, an SP-rank officer, as Nodal Officer in Patiala to assist affected farmers. Amidst these measures, farmer unions announced protests on March 28, criticizing the administration's handling of the situation.
