The Rajya Sabha witnessed turbulence on Monday as heated debates over reservation for Muslims in Karnataka's public contracts led to an adjournment of proceedings. The uproar began after Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri tabled amendments to the Oilfields (Regulation and Development) Amendment Bill, 2024, amid vocal opposition.
Despite the vocal dissent, the motion saw passage through a voice vote. Subsequently, Deputy Chairman Harivansh adjourned the house due to ongoing disorder. Tensions flared earlier when Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge vehemently denied any Congress initiative to alter the Constitution to address Muslim reservations.
In contrast, Leader of House JP Nadda accused Congress of pushing for Muslim reservations, a claim that intensified the slogan shouting and disruption, forcing Harivansh to briefly adjourn the house yet again.
