Tamil Nadu's Language Row: DMK Replaces Rupee Symbol in 2025 Budget Logo
In an intensifying language dispute, the Tamil Nadu government has replaced the Devanagari rupee symbol with a Tamil letter in its 2025-26 budget logo. The move has sparked political controversy, with DMK opposing the Centre's three-language formula and BJP leaders criticizing the decision, calling it divisive.

The Tamil Nadu government has escalated its ongoing language dispute with the Central government by altering the Devanagari rupee symbol in its budget logo for the fiscal year 2025-26. This decision reflects the DMK administration's firm opposition to the National Education Policy's three-language formula, which it deems as an imposition of Hindi.
In response to the shift, BJP leaders have sharply criticized the DMK, accusing it of promoting divisiveness and undermining national unity. Chief among their complaints is that the symbol, designed by a Tamilian under the UPA regime, holds national significance. However, DMK leaders argue that the use of Tamil is a rightful assertion of cultural identity.
This political tussle continues to unfold amid a backdrop of intensified rhetoric. Both parties maintain their positions on the broader debate of language policy and regional autonomy, marking a significant stand-off in Tamil Nadu's political landscape.
