In the Kerala Assembly, UDF MLA A K M Ashraf launched a scathing attack on BJP leader P C George for making purported communal remarks, accusing the state government of complacency. The criticism came amid budget discussions for 2025-26, with Ashraf questioning if George had impunity for his statements.
Ashraf alleged that George frequently makes communal statements, scandalizing communities in the state. Citing George's recent controversial claim that 400 girls were victims of 'love jihad' in Meenachil Taluk, Ashraf demanded government action and pointed to Karnataka's example of arresting those making communal remarks.
While the ruling front offered no response, George has recently been embroiled in legal troubles. He was granted bail last February following a hate speech case, but his latest comments at a Pala conference, led by church leaders, have reignited debates on the term 'love jihad', which lacks legal definition and reported incidents according to central agencies.
