Zhao Leji, the third-ranked leader of China's Communist Party, was notably absent from a critical parliamentary session on Tuesday. Normally, Zhao would be expected to lead such meetings, but his absence prompted an announcement attributing it to a respiratory infection. This marked a departure from the Communist Party's tradition of keeping leaders' health issues under wraps.

Li Hongzhong, the vice chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, stood in for Zhao during the session, telling over 2,000 delegates that he had been entrusted with leading the meeting. The situation raised eyebrows, given that no Politburo Standing Committee member has missed such an event in nearly two decades.

Zhao's absence is reminiscent of previous instances, such as former foreign minister Qin Gang's unexplained disappearance preceding his removal from office.
