In a significant development, West Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Bandyopadhyay ordered the House secretary on Tuesday to withhold documents related to assembly proceedings from BJP legislators. This directive followed an incident where BJP MLAs tore official papers in protest.
The confrontation escalated when the Speaker rejected multiple BJP proposals, including adjourning the House over alleged attacks on temples and introducing a bill concerning children. In response, BJP MLAs staged a walkout, highlighting their dissatisfaction.
Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, termed the Speaker's directive as unprecedented in the constitutional framework, accusing the ruling party of stifling democracy in the assembly. Adhikari announced plans for a larger protest, scheduled to take place in front of the assembly on Wednesday.
