In a move poised to reshape India's immigration landscape, the Immigration and Foreigners Bill 2025 was introduced in the Lok Sabha. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai tabled the bill on behalf of Home Minister Amit Shah, heralding it as a step towards modernizing the nation's immigration laws.
Rai elaborated on the bill's provisions, underscoring the need to streamline regulations for individuals entering and exiting India. The bill proposes granting the Central government enhanced powers over the issuance of passports, visas, and registration processes for foreigners. However, its introduction met with resistance from opposition members, prompting a heated debate in the parliament.
Congress MP Manish Tewari, representing Chandigarh, vociferously opposed the bill, alleging that it contravenes several fundamental rights enshrined in the Indian Constitution. Echoing his concerns, TMC MP Sougata Roy criticized the bill, questioning its necessity given existing legislations covering foreign entry and exit. As Parliament's budget session proceeds, contentious discussions are expected to continue. (ANI)
