Former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo announced on Monday a hunger strike in opposition to his trial for alleged rebellion. Prosecutors are seeking a 34-year sentence for Castillo, who has been in custody since December 2022.

Castillo's arrest followed his attempt to dissolve Congress and govern by decree, which he defended as a political move rather than an act of rebellion. He argues that Judge Norma Carbajal has already judged his case by interpreting rebellion without physical violence, an interpretation he disputes vehemently.

Previously a union leader and rural school teacher, Castillo emerged victoriously in Peru's 2021 election. Now, he claims the trial is biased and refuses state-appointed legal counsel. Besides rebellion charges, he faces separate corruption investigations. The political turbulence has sparked significant unrest in Peru, contributing to the deaths of over 50 civilians.
