Congress Nagaland MP S Supongmeren Jamir has voiced sharp criticism against the Central government's decision to reduce the area of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) along the Indo-Myanmar border from 16 km to 10 km and to reimpose the Protected Area Permit (PAP) in Nagaland.
Jamir highlighted the dual nature of these measures as both logistical and sentimental issues, emphasizing the deep cultural and familial ties Naga people share with communities across the border in Myanmar. He stated that the Congress party would persist in urging the government to revoke these decisions.
He contended that such actions undermine the Centre's Act East policy and harm the region's socio-economic fabric by obstructing age-old cross-border trade and exchanges, integral to Naga life. Jamir advocated for the relaxation or repeal of these restrictions, proposing security solutions that minimize local hardships.
