In a significant political development, President's rule was imposed in the conflict-ridden state of Manipur on Thursday, following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. This move comes after prolonged ethnic violence that has severely impacted the northeastern state.
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification confirming the state assembly's suspension, drawing authority from Article 356 of the Constitution. This decision aims to restore order as governance is now under the central government's purview, triggered by a report from the state's governor.
During his tenure, Singh faced numerous controversies, most notably the ethnic clashes between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, which resulted in significant casualties and displacement. Amid declining political support, Singh's resignation is seen as a step towards reconciliation and peace in the region.
