In a visit to Damascus, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock firmly stated that Europe will not back financially the creation of any new Islamist structures in Syria. This statement came after her meeting with Syria's de facto leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa.
Minister Baerbock reiterated Europe's commitment to supporting the region but clarified the continent's position to distance itself from being a financial sponsor of nascent Islamist formations. Her comments underscore a cautionary approach towards radical elements within the war-torn region.
While Europe aims to assist, the pledge is to ensure funds are not directed towards what could be destabilizing factors, reflecting a balance between aid and security concerns in the geopolitical landscape.
