India and Maldives: Strengthening Ties Amid Economic Challenges

During discussions with Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel, Jaishankar highlighted plans to enhance cross-border trade through local currency exchanges and outlined India's continued financial support to alleviate the Maldives' economic stress.

In their meeting, both ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at bolstering high-impact community development projects in the Maldives, funded by Indian grant assistance. Jaishankar reaffirmed India's commitment to its 'Neighbourhood First' policy, emphasizing the longstanding support given to the Maldives in times of need.

Khaleel's visit to India marked a reaffirmation of President Mohamed Muizzu's dedication to strengthening ties with New Delhi, focusing on a comprehensive economic and maritime security partnership. The bilateral relationship, crucial for both nations, continues to be a central pillar in the Indian Ocean Region, despite recent geopolitical tensions involving the Maldives' past government leadership.
