Ukraine to Revive Diplomatic Ties with Post-Assad Syria
Ukrainian President Zelenskiy announces plans to restore diplomatic relations with Syria, following a government overthrow. Ukraine had severed ties in 2022 due to Syria's recognition of Russia-occupied Ukrainian territories. Now, Ukraine is working to strengthen ties with Syria's new leadership and increasing agricultural exports.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy declared his intention to re-establish diplomatic relations with Syria, just weeks after a coup toppled the Russia-supported government in Damascus.
The initiative follows a visit to Syria by Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Agriculture Minister Vitaliy Koval, who disclosed that Ukraine had already sent a shipment of food aid. "We are preparing to resume diplomatic relations with Syria and cooperation in international organizations," Zelenskiy stated.
Ukraine severed diplomatic ties with Syria in June 2022, reacting to Syria's recognition of the Russia-occupied Ukrainian territories of Donetsk and Luhansk. Following the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad, Ukraine seeks to forge new relationships with Syria's nascent Islamist government. Additionally, Ukraine aims to expand trade with Lebanon, especially in agriculture.
