In a robust New Year's address, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has reaffirmed his commitment to bolstering Taiwan's defence capabilities against mounting Chinese threats. Speaking decisively, Lai emphasized Taiwan's crucial position as a safeguard for global democracy, acknowledging the challenges posed by authoritarian regimes.
With China persistently claiming Taiwan as its own and increasing military pressure, Lai highlighted the importance of international collaboration to maintain peace and stability. He noted China's aggressive tactics, including near-daily military provocations and diplomatic pressures, as key factors in the escalating tensions.
Lai also addressed domestic political matters, condemning recent moves by the Kuomintang-led opposition to pass controversial bills. He asserted that political disputes must be resolved democratically within the constitutional framework, to ensure the continued growth and integrity of Taiwan's democracy.
