Diplomatic Bridges: Syria-Kuwait Relations Reignite
Syria's newly appointed foreign minister, Asaad Hassan al-Shibani, invites Kuwait to reopen its embassy and restore relations following Bashar al-Assad's downfall. During Kuwaiti foreign minister Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya's visit, they discussed regional cooperation and reconsidering sanctions against Syria, aiming to reinforce Arab unity and regional stability.
Syria's foreign minister, Asaad Hassan al-Shibani, urged Kuwait to reopen its embassy in Damascus and restore diplomatic ties, in the aftermath of Bashar al-Assad's regime collapse. This appeal was made during his meeting with Kuwaiti foreign minister Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya, signaling Syria's readiness for renewed regional cooperation.
The Kuwaiti delegation, led by Al-Yahya, held discussions with Syria's de facto leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, focusing on regional developments and the potential for collaboration, as Gulf states show willingness to reconnect with post-Assad Syria. Al-Yahya also called for the international community to reassess sanctions imposed on Syria.
Al-Yahya emphasized the importance of regional unity, stating that the visit is a step towards opening 'a new page of regional cooperation.' The move comes after the Arab League readmitted Syria in 2013, post suspension following Assad's alliance with Iran and Russia, which resulted in the alienation by Sunni Arab states.
