Court Upholds $5M Verdict: E. Jean Carroll vs. Donald Trump
A federal appeals court upheld a $5 million verdict in favor of E. Jean Carroll against Donald Trump. The lawsuit involved accusations of sexual abuse and defamation. Although Trump did not admit to rape, he was deemed responsible for both sexual assault and defamation, resulting in this verdict.
A federal appeals court has upheld a hefty $5 million verdict awarded to E. Jean Carroll in her case against Donald Trump. This comes after a jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming the former magazine columnist, with the appellate decision being issued by a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan.
The verdict originated from an alleged incident in a Bergdorf Goodman department store dressing room in Manhattan in 1996, where Carroll accused Trump of rape—a claim he continues to deny. Despite not being found guilty of rape, Trump was held accountable for sexual assault and defamation under this verdict.
Trump's legal team argues for dismissal, citing that the judge erroneously allowed jurors to hear testimony from other accusers and view Trump's infamous 2005 'Access Hollywood' tape. These developments continue as Trump, despite these damning rulings, won a second presidential term on November 5.
