Musk's Controversial AfD Endorsement Sparks Political Uproar in Germany
Elon Musk has stirred controversy in Germany by endorsing the far-right AfD party, sparking criticism from government officials. His comments, made ahead of the German federal election, have been labeled as nonsense by a government spokesperson. Politicians express concern over foreign influence on democratic processes.
Elon Musk, the world's richest man, has ignited a political storm in Germany after expressing support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. His endorsement came in a guest opinion piece for the Welt am Sonntag newspaper, which led to the resignation of the commentary editor in protest.
German politicians, including a government spokesperson, have condemned Musk's intervention ahead of the country's federal elections, branding his comments as nonsensical. They caution against external influences on Germany's democratic processes, particularly as the AfD is under suspicion of right-wing extremism.
Lars Klingbeil, co-leader of the Social Democrats, likened Musk's actions to those of Russian President Putin, suggesting both aim to destabilize Germany. Opposition leader Friedrich Merz criticized Musk's comments as pretentious, underscoring the sensitivity of foreign involvement in domestic politics.
