In a significant development, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members of Parliament have voiced robust support for the proposed 'One Nation, One Election' Bill. The initiative, they argue, aligns perfectly with democratic principles and aims to prevent the wastage of the nation's resources and working days due to frequent elections.
BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar told ANI that the bill is 'totally democratic' and questions why the nation should incur losses from repeated electoral processes. Fellow BJP MP Yogender Chandolia echoed this sentiment, countering opposition criticism and emphasizing the country's need for such legislation.
The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, were passed in Lok Sabha with significant majorities. The Law Minister has sent the bill to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for further review, reinforcing the government's commitment to aligning assembly elections in territories like Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir with the new framework.
