Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Friday directed the Police Commissioner to initiate a month-long special drive aimed at identifying illegal immigrants residing in the city, in coordination with central agencies.

Saxena also urged civic bodies, including the MCD and NDMC, as well as Delhi's Chief Secretary, to stay alert as these immigrants might attempt to secure fake citizenship and election identity cards. The directive comes as Delhi nears its assembly elections scheduled for February next year, with BJP leaders accusing the ruling AAP of harboring Rohingyas and Bangladeshis.

In a letter to key officials, Saxena referenced social media and other reports highlighting a rise in illegal immigrants, their encroachment on public spaces, and alleged fraudulent activities to obtain identity documents. He emphasized the need for vigilance to prevent illegal immigrants from obtaining the right to vote, which he argued poses a threat to national security.
