Diplomatic Drama: Tsai Ing-wen's High-Stakes Visit to Canada
Former Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen plans an important visit to Canada, amid rising tensions between China and Taiwan. Although not officially recognized by Canada, this visit highlights Taiwan's ongoing defiance against Chinese aggression. Tsai remains a key figure in Taiwan's diplomatic efforts to strengthen international ties.
Former Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen is preparing for a significant trip to Canada next week, according to two diplomatic sources who spoke to Reuters. This visit has garnered attention given Tsai's emergence as a symbol of Taiwan's resilience against China's escalating military threats.
Despite Canada's lack of formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan due to Beijing's claims, the political and economic engagements between both sides have been increasing. Tsai, who stepped down in May, is scheduled to attend and speak at the Halifax International Security Forum starting November 22.
China has expressed strong opposition to the visit, urging Canada to respect the one-China principle. Meanwhile, Tsai's planned visit, first reported by Taiwanese media, also underlines her ongoing role as a senior figure within Taiwan's ruling party, continuing to influence diplomatic relations under the watchful eyes of international diplomats.
