Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Thursday proposed that the minimum age to contest Legislative Assembly elections be lowered from 25 to 21. He advocated for this change to increase youth representation in state legislatures.
Reddy highlighted that 21-year-old IAS and IPS officers are effectively serving in districts, suggesting that young individuals of the same age could also excel as MLAs. He drew attention to the successful reduction of the voting age from 21 to 18 in the past and argued for a similar approach to election candidacy.
Speaking at a mock assembly event on Children's Day, Reddy emphasized that younger MLAs could focus on important youth-related issues such as sports, education, and employment. He also paid tribute to the efforts of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and acknowledged Jawaharlal Nehru's contributions.
