Former Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen's Anticipated Visit to Canada: Defying China
Former Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen plans to visit Canada amid sensitive geopolitical tensions with China. Visiting Nova Scotia for the Halifax International Security Forum, Tsai remains a symbol of Taiwan's defiance against China's military threats. Her visits are closely followed by regional diplomats.
Former Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen is set to visit Canada next week, as confirmed by two diplomatic sources speaking to Reuters. This anticipated visit by a prominent Taiwan political figure highlights Taiwan's resistance to China's military threats.
Despite the lack of official diplomatic ties between Canada and Taiwan, economic and political interactions have surged in response to Beijing's aggressive posturing towards Taiwan. Tsai, who resigned in May, is scheduled to deliver a speech at the Halifax International Security Forum starting on Nov. 22.
Neither the Halifax Forum nor Canada's Global Affairs department commented on the visit, while China also remained silent. Canada and China's relationship remains strained over issues like alleged hacking and human rights. Tsai's trip reflects her ongoing influence in Taiwanese politics and the increasing geopolitical tensions in the region.
