WTO's Critical Decision: Okonjo-Iweala's Reappointment Meeting Scheduled
The World Trade Organization plans a crucial meeting to discuss the reappointment of its Director-General, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Amid past criticism from Donald Trump, the meeting aims to fast-track the decision-making process to prevent any potential blockages. Okonjo-Iweala remains the sole candidate for the position.
The World Trade Organization (WTO) has scheduled an important meeting of its highest decision-making body to discuss the reappointment of current Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. This decision, revealed in a document on Tuesday, seeks to expedite the lengthy appointment process that may face opposition from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.
The General Council chair, in a communication, outlined that the two-day meeting starting on November 28 will feature Okonjo-Iweala, who will present her vision for the 166-member institution and engage in a Q&A session with delegates. The second day could see members taking a decisive vote on her reappointment.
Despite being the only candidate, Okonjo-Iweala's reappointment involves potential complexities, especially given the Trump administration's previous attempt to block her first term. With Trump's proposed tariffs and trade policies, the WTO faces a potentially turbulent period.
