Steve Bannon Faces Court: Fraud Charges in Border Wall Fundraiser
Steve Bannon, former adviser to Donald Trump, faces trial on criminal fraud charges related to a fundraising campaign for the U.S.-Mexico border wall. Prosecutors accuse him of deceiving donors. Bannon, who was pardoned by Trump on federal charges, has pleaded not guilty to the current state charges.
Steve Bannon, once an adviser to President-elect Donald Trump, will appear in court on Tuesday as his trial on criminal fraud charges looms. The charges stem from a fundraising effort to support Trump's border wall, involving over $15 million from donors in 2019. Bannon has maintained his innocence.
The trial, set to begin on December 9 in a Manhattan court, follows an indictment secured by District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Bannon is accused of diverting funds and deceiving donors, with charges that include money laundering and conspiracy. Presidential pardons can't block state prosecutions, so a Trump return to the White House wouldn't shield Bannon from conviction.
Bannon's legal team contends he used funds to cover legitimate expenses. Notably, Brian Kolfage, linked to the fundraiser, admitted guilt on related federal charges. Bannon's history includes a pivotal role in Trump's 2016 campaign and a controversial 2022 conviction for defying Congress in a separate federal case.
