The Pitfalls of Forcing Neutrality on Ukraine
Finland's foreign minister argues against imposing neutrality on Ukraine, citing historical tensions with Russia. She stresses that neutrality will not solve the Ukraine crisis and questions Russia's trustworthiness in adhering to agreements. Rather than negotiate over Ukraine's head, she advocates respecting its sovereignty.
Finland's foreign minister has voiced strong opposition to the idea of forcing neutrality upon Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia, stating such a move won't elicit a peaceful resolution. She highlights the precarious nature of 'Finlandisation,' a strategy Finland once used to balance its independence while dealing with its eastern neighbor.
In an interview with Reuters, Minister Elina Valtonen expressed skepticism about Russia's trustworthiness concerning treaties. She cautioned against negotiating Ukraine's status without its consent, noting that such actions would undermine the international system. Valtonen emphasized maintaining Ukraine's sovereignty, which is crucial for lasting peace.
Highlighting Finland and Sweden's recent abandonment of military non-alignment in favor of NATO, Valtonen argues that coercing Ukraine into neutrality risks compromising its territorial integrity and aspirations for NATO membership. She underscores the importance of allowing Ukraine to choose its path without external imposition.
