Diplomatic Play: High-Stakes Talks Amid Mideast Turmoil
Israeli Minister Ron Dermer will meet U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken as a U.S.-imposed deadline for improving Gaza’s humanitarian situation approaches. Meanwhile, mediator Qatar withdrew from truce talks between Israel and Gaza, while Israel reported progress in Lebanon ceasefire negotiations.
Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer is set to meet U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington, a strategic conversation occurring just as a U.S.-imposed deadline to ameliorate Gaza's dire humanitarian situation looms. The high-stakes meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET on Monday.
The hopes for a ceasefire between Israel and Gaza have dimmed further as Qatar withdraws its mediating role. In contrast, Israel reported progress in ceasefire negotiations with Lebanon. A U.S. letter in mid-October demanded Israel act swiftly to address the humanitarian crisis created by its military offensive in Gaza, an action Israel has vigorously justified against allegations of genocide.
Amid this chaos, Washington's leverage appears weakened following Donald Trump's victory in the presidential election, casting doubt over the effectiveness of Democratic President Joe Biden's administration. Blinken had previously urged Israel to increase humanitarian aid in Gaza, while Israeli operations in Lebanon continue to raise regional tensions.
