BJP MP Stresses All-Inclusive Debate on Waqf Bill

BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi, a key figure in the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024, has reiterated the committee's dedication to honoring a wide range of opinions on the proposed legislation. The JPC has invested over 100 hours in discussions and held 25 meetings since August, engaging with 146 organizations to refine the bill.
Sarangi stated the committee's openness to listening to as many perspectives as possible, resulting in feedback from 195 organizations nationwide. The refined bill, molded by these discussions, aims to be presented before the Lok Sabha Speaker. Constituted on August 9, 2024, by Speaker Om Birla, the JPC held its first meeting later that month.
The committee has considered approximately 95.86 lakh suggestions gathered via various means. Sarangi emphasized the democratic nature of the process, with diverse opinions both supporting and opposing the 44 proposed amendments to the Waqf Act of 1995. The committee's outreach included a recent visit to Guwahati and ongoing hearings in Bhubaneswar.
The JPC Chairman, Jagdambika Pal, confirmed ongoing efforts to consider perspectives from across the nation, including a recent session in Bhubaneswar with diverse groups like High Court lawyers and Islamic scholars. The JPC plans to expand its reach to other states, ensuring extensive consultations.
Pal addressed opposition concerns about the JPC's study tours, emphasizing the intention to gather insights widely. The tours aim to offer a platform to state administrations, waqf boards, and minority commissions, ensuring all stakeholders have a voice.
