Tensions in Amsterdam: Soccer Fan Violence and Political Fallout
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof will not attend COP29 climate summit due to unrest in Amsterdam involving Israeli soccer fans and pro-Palestinian protesters. Instead, Dutch Climate Minister Sophie Hermans and a climate envoy will attend. The violence is being investigated, with antisemitism a possible motive.
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof announced that he will skip the upcoming COP29 climate summit, as tensions escalate in Amsterdam following clashes between Israeli soccer fans and pro-Palestinian demonstrators. Schoof emphasized the importance of addressing the fallout from the week's violence.
While Schoof stays behind, Dutch Climate Minister Sophie Hermans will attend the environment conference from Nov. 11-22. The situation will be a key topic in an upcoming cabinet meeting, prompted by the unrest, which involved anti-Israeli slurs and left at least five injured.
Authorities are probing whether the violence was organized and possibly antisemitic. Justice Minister David van Weel assured swift justice and European Union-wide efforts to combat rising antisemitism. Political leaders have condemned the attacks, and several arrests have been made.
