Russia Signals Stalemate: Arms Control Talks with U.S. on Hold
Russia's deputy foreign minister states that there are no grounds to resume dialogue on arms control with the U.S. currently. The two nations are exchanging signals regarding Ukraine through closed channels. Russia awaits proposals from President-elect Trump but warns of the nuclear option if conflicts escalate.
Russia's foreign ministry has declared that there are currently no grounds for resuming dialogue on strategic stability and arms control with the United States. The statement, reported by Interfax, highlights icy relations between the two powers, as communicated by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.
Ryabkov noted ongoing communication channels through military and political levels regarding Ukraine, pointing out Russia's willingness to consider proposals from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Moscow remains firm about potential nuclear escalation should tensions worsen, reinforcing updates to its nuclear doctrine.
President Putin recently praised Trump's courage and expressed openness to dialogue. However, Ryabkov warned of potential diplomatic ruptures if further provocations arise, particularly concerning Russia's assets or escalating Ukraine tensions.
