On Sunday, Moldova is set for a dramatic second round in its presidential election, facing off two prominent figures: the current president, Maia Sandu, and former prosecutor general, Alexandr Stoianoglo. The first round saw Sandu leading with 42.49% of the vote, while Stoianoglo garnered 25.9%.

Maia Sandu, born in 1972 near the Romanian border, pursued studies in international relations and public policy. She has served in various influential roles, including at the World Bank and as Moldova's first female president. Criticized for failing to address economic issues, Sandu has recently pursued a distinctly pro-EU stance amidst geopolitical tensions.

Stoianoglo, an ethnic Gagauz, hails from Gagauzia and has held various significant positions, including prosecutor general. Despite being dismissed amid corruption allegations, he won a legal battle in the European Court of Human Rights. Stoianoglo's campaign advocates balancing Moldova's allegiances between Western and Eastern influences.
