North Korea's deployment of troops to Russia has been labeled an escalation by Finland's President Alexander Stubb, contradicting China's stated position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. After extensive talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Stubb emphasized the need for continued dialogue with Russia to de-escalate tensions.
The U.S. reported that 10,000 North Korean troops are headed towards Russia's Kursk border region, heightening conflict with Ukrainian forces. Stubb urged China to adhere to its principle of avoiding escalation and continue peacemaking efforts, stressing Ukraine's peace plan as a starting point.
While China's state media emphasized cooperation, trade discussions with Finland included concerns over upcoming EU tariffs on Chinese electric cars. Stubb warned against a cycle of trade escalation, as Helsinki remains a staunch supporter of Ukraine and critiques China's relations with Russia.
