Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended an apology on Tuesday to the elderly population aged above 70 in Delhi and West Bengal, attributing the state's political decisions for the non-participation in the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. He expressed his regret during an event at the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) on the ninth Ayurveda Day.
The Prime Minister criticized the political motives obstructing the healthcare scheme's rollout in these states, which denies seniors essential health coverage. Modi lamented the inability to assist the elderly residents due to these political barricades, calling the situation inhumane and against compassionate governance.
Ayushman Bharat, a national health initiative, offers families low-income comprehensive insurance up to Rs 5 lakh for hospitalization. Launched in 2018 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the scheme remains unimplemented in Delhi and West Bengal, limiting its reach to those in need within these regions.
