Tinubu's Bold Cabinet Reshuffle: A New Strategy Amid Economic Challenges
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has reshuffled his cabinet, sparking discussion amid economic challenges. The reshuffle saw seven new members, five dismissals, and ten reassignments. Key ministers were retained, while notable departures included education and tourism ministries. Tinubu's economic policies have led to high inflation, affecting citizens' cost of living.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has made significant changes to his 45-member cabinet, appointing seven new members, dismissing five, and reassigning ten others, a spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday.
Tinubu's initial reforms after assuming office last year had generated optimism as they aimed to address Nigeria's economic issues. However, 16 months on, his strategies, notably devaluing the naira and cutting petrol and electricity subsidies, have contributed to a sharp inflation increase, now at 32.70%, leading to a severe cost-of-living crisis among citizens.
According to Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the reshuffle included new appointments for humanitarian and poverty reduction, trade and investment, and other sectors. Key ministers, including finance, defence, and energy, retained their roles, while education and tourism saw their leaders replaced. Tinubu has yet to appoint a permanent petroleum minister.
