In an intense escalation of her ongoing critique, Indigenous Senator Lidia Thorpe has accused King Charles III of being complicit in the "genocide" of Australia's First Nations people. Her remarks came after an encounter with the monarch during a parliamentary reception where she vocally challenged him about the colonial legacy of British rule.
Despite facing considerable backlash from political circles and the public, Senator Thorpe expressed her unwavering commitment to justice in an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. "The colonial system is all about shutting black women down in this country," she stated, emphasizing the support she has received from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia.
Thorpe's criticisms focused on the ongoing social disadvantages faced by Indigenous Australians and the unresolved issues of historical injustices. During the parliamentary reception, security intervened as she attempted to approach the king, who continued his diplomatic visit to Australia before traveling to Samoa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
