Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been lauded for his role in renewing the Kartarpur Corridor Agreement between India and Pakistan, extending it for another five years. According to Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari, this extension is a demonstration of the Prime Minister's respect for the Sikh community and their faith.
Bhandari emphasized that successive governments failed to fulfill promises to the Sikh community, whereas Modi not only opened the Kartarpur Corridor but also safeguarded it through a significant extension. This move, he asserts, underscores Modi's commitment to Sikhs and Punjab at large.
The original agreement, signed on October 24, 2019, facilitated pilgrimage access from India to the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan. It was valid for five years, and now, through diplomatic channels, its validity has been extended, ensuring uninterrupted pilgrimage opportunities. India continues to press Pakistan to waive the USD 20 charge per pilgrim.
