AIUDF Opts Out of Assam By-Elections to Focus on Panchayat Polls

The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has taken a strategic decision to refrain from participating in the forthcoming Assam by-elections, set to occur across five assembly constituencies. AIUDF General Secretary Rafiqul Islam confirmed to ANI on Tuesday that the party has opted to focus its efforts on the upcoming panchayat elections instead.
Initially, AIUDF had planned to contest in one of the five seats. However, in response to suggestions from various organizations and secular intellectuals, the party's core committee, helmed by President Badruddin Ajmal, decided against contesting any seats in the by-elections. This decision shifts the AIUDF's focus towards the December panchayat elections in Assam.
Despite having a notable vote bank in each constituency, AIUDF's decision underscores their independence from BJP and other parties. In the 2021 assembly polls, AIUDF did not compete in these seats and continues to maintain its independence by not supporting any candidates. Meanwhile, the BJP-led Assam government and other opposition parties, including AGP, UPPL, and Congress, have announced their respective candidates for the constituencies.
