In an incident that has shaken parliamentary norms, Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee has been suspended following a tumultuous Joint Parliamentary Committee meeting on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, where he reportedly smashed a glass bottle during an altercation with BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay.
Kalyan Banerjee's suspension for one session follows a 9-7 division vote, concluding a day of high drama at the JPC meeting. Sources indicate that Banerjee had sought to speak out of turn, escalating tensions with Abhijit Gangopadhyay, which resulted in an exchange of abusive language.
The clash led Banerjee to break a glass bottle, resulting in self-injury and necessitating medical attention where he received four stitches. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, aimed at increasing transparency and reclaiming illegally occupied waqf properties, was overshadowed by this incident.
