Lithuania's Political Tug-of-War: Election Amidst Rising Inflation and Defence Concerns
Lithuanians head to the polls with national sentiment focused on surging living costs and supporting high defence budgets due to potential threats from Russia. The Social Democrats are leading in polls against Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte’s party, reflecting public dissatisfaction with inflation and the current economy.
As Lithuania gears up for national elections on Sunday, voters appear poised to penalize the centre-right government led by Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte. High living costs have significantly impacted her administration's popularity, although her stance on increased defence spending to counter Russian threats has found wide agreement.
Polls indicate the Social Democrats, headed by Vilija Blinkeviciute, lead with 18% support. Despite Simonyte's efforts to expand defence budgets post-Ukraine invasion, economic struggles, particularly inflation reaching 20%, have clouded her tenure. Deputy leader Laurynas Kasciunas acknowledges potential leadership changes as a traditional election outcome.
The opposition's campaign, led by Gintautas Paluckas, advocates enhancing defence without increasing taxes, opting instead to raise the budget deficit. Additionally, they've critiqued the government's management of healthcare services. Forming a coalition government without Nemunas Dawn, associated with controversy, remains crucial post-election.
