Chowdhury Mohd Akaram, an independent Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing the Surankote seat in Jammu and Kashmir, declared on Thursday his unwavering stance against joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Despite numerous political parties expressing interest in aligning with him, Akaram has yet to decide on his political future.
Akaram, who ran as an independent candidate after being denied a ticket by the National Conference in favor of a Congress nominee, attributed his decision to contest independently to his confidence in public support. "The backing from the people conveyed that I did not require any party's mandate," Akaram told ANI.
He further stated that his priority is consultations with his core committee and adherence to the public's choice. The National Conference-Congress alliance has triumphed in the Jammu and Kashmir election, securing an absolute majority with 49 seats, despite BJP's strong showing. The election marks a significant political milestone post the repeal of Article 370 in 2019.
