Political Turmoil in Kenya: Deputy President Faces Impeachment
Kenya's parliament has voted to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on charges including self-enrichment and ethnic hatred. The decision now moves to the senate for consideration. Gachagua, who has denied the charges, claims a falling out with President Ruto amid political shifts.
On Tuesday, Kenya's parliament voted decisively to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, citing charges of self-enrichment and inciting ethnic hatred. The motion, supported by over two-thirds of National Assembly members, was announced by the chamber's speaker, Moses Wetang'ula.
Gachagua, who aided President William Ruto's 2022 election victory by securing central Kenya's votes, has claimed estrangement from Ruto recently. Political alliances have shifted since public dissent over unpopular tax hikes this summer led to Ruto reshuffling his cabinet.
As the matter advances to the senate, Gachagua continues to dispute the accusations, asserting innocence and contesting the impeachment process in court. Public opinion remains divided, with a slim majority supporting the impeachment proceedings.
