French Prime Minister Michel Barnier managed to navigate a crucial challenge on Tuesday as his government survived a no-confidence vote initiated by leftist lawmakers.
Appointed by President Emmanuel Macron following a snap election resulting in a hung parliament, Barnier's administration is currently propped up by the far right and faces opposition from the left. The no-confidence motion, viewed as a long shot, failed with only 197 votes in favor, far short of the 289 needed.
Attention now shifts to Barnier's upcoming budget proposal, expected on Thursday. The budget is anticipated to feature tax hikes and spending cuts totaling approximately 60 billion euros, aimed at tackling the country's expanding deficit.
