James Cleverly, a moderate former foreign and interior minister, has taken an unexpected lead in the Conservative leadership race, marking a pivotal moment for Britain's historic party.

On Tuesday, Cleverly secured 39 votes out of 120 from lawmakers, surpassing right-wing former immigration minister Robert Jenrick who garnered 31 votes and former trade minister Kemi Badenoch with 30. The contest saw the elimination of Tom Tugendhat, a moderate former security minister.

The leadership contest, which will further narrow to two candidates on Wednesday, comes amid hopes of returning to power after the Labour government's rocky start under Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Cleverly's push for a 'normal' party image has gained traction, crucial as concerns over immigration and public service pressures rise among voters.
