British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged to reset relations with Brussels, aiming to deepen cooperation without renegotiating the foundational Brexit deal. In talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Starmer highlighted the shared desire for a joint security pact but recognized potential challenges in discussions on goods and people movement.

'There will be issues which are difficult to resolve and on areas on which we will stand firm... but we will find constructive ways to work together,' Starmer stated at a press conference. Both leaders agreed to hold regular EU-UK summits, with the first scheduled for early 2025.

Von der Leyen and Starmer released a joint statement committing to meet again in the autumn to advance their agenda of strengthened cooperation, setting a warmer tone compared to previous administrations. Starmer has ruled out rejoining the EU's single market or customs union but seeks mutual recognition of professional qualifications and reduced border checks. Despite the positive tone, both sides acknowledge tough negotiations lie ahead.
