Manchester City midfielder and Portugal international Matheus Nunes was briefly arrested by Spanish police last month for allegedly stealing a mobile phone, a police source confirmed to Reuters, corroborating a report by El Mundo newspaper.

Nunes reportedly forced a high-end mobile phone out of the hands of a 58-year-old man at a Madrid nightclub, suspecting that the man had taken a picture of him without his consent in the bathroom, according to El Mundo.

A police spokesperson stated that a Portuguese citizen was arrested on September 8 at 5:30 a.m. in a downtown nightclub for alleged robbery of a high-end phone. After being questioned, the man was released pending trial. The arrest was confirmed to involve Nunes, with the case being treated as a robbery due to the phone's value exceeding 300 euros ($332).

A spokesperson for Nunes did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Nunes, who joined Premier League champions Manchester City from Wolverhampton Wanderers last season, was not called up for Portugal's international duty last month, despite being part of the squad at Euro 2024 in Germany this past summer.
