United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued an urgent appeal for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon, urging respect for the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity, according to U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.

'An all-out war must be avoided in Lebanon at all costs,' Dujarric stated in a release. He added that Guterres had a conversation with Lebanon's caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Tuesday, signaling the U.N.'s readiness to assist those in need.

'The Secretary-General will continue his contacts, and his representatives on the ground will also continue their efforts to de-escalate the situation,' Dujarric concluded.
