In response to former prime minister Imran Khan's protest call, the Punjab government of Pakistan has banned public gatherings in several districts, citing terrorism threats. This move comes a day after Khan urged nationwide protests to oppose a proposed constitutional amendment potentially affecting the judiciary.
Khan, who established the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), called for demonstrations in Mianwali, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Islamabad, and Lahore. Punjab's provincial authorities, led by Maryam Nawaz Sharif, have imposed restrictions to prevent potential terrorist actions amid the planned protests.
The ban lasts two days in Faisalabad and Bahawalpur, and seven days in Mianwali. PTI has previously held rallies demanding the release of Khan and judicial independence. Khan faces imprisonment under various charges, including his conviction in the Toshakhana corruption case.
