On Monday, Naveen Patnaik, leader of the opposition in the Odisha assembly, condemned the recent communal unrest under the new BJP government, claiming it has damaged the state's peaceful reputation.
The ruling BJP fired back, accusing Patnaik of inciting violence and disrupting peace.
Patnaik made his remarks while meeting with BJD leaders in Bhadrak, where recent flare-ups were reported, alleging that the series of incidents under the BJP's watch have cast doubt on the efficiency of the state government.
He lamented that Odisha, traditionally known for its harmony, is now at risk and called for collective efforts to restore peace. In rebuttal, the BJP highlighted past violence during Patnaik's rule, citing NCRB data showing Odisha's high rate of communal riots in 2017.
State BJP spokesperson Anil Biswal pointed to a higher frequency of communal disputes when Patnaik was in office, claiming an average of four incidents monthly in 2023. Patnaik countered by urging BJD leaders to publicize the positive aspects of his administration while preparing for their 'Jan Sampark Pada Yatra' commencing October 2.
