British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing a major leadership crisis after one of his MPs, Rosie Duffield, resigned from the Labour Party, delivering a stinging critique of his leadership.
Duffield, who represents Canterbury in Kent, announced her resignation in a letter published in 'The Sunday Times', where she denounced the Labour leader's policies as "cruel and unnecessary" amidst an ongoing controversy over expensive gifts.
In her resignation letter, Duffield attributed her decision to a series of "last straws" but emphasized that the government's unpopular policies were the key trigger. She expressed her lack of confidence in Starmer's leadership and criticized his approach.
Her resignation has intensified scrutiny over Starmer's acceptance of GBP 107,145 in gifts, benefits, and hospitality, despite them being declared per parliamentary rules. This controversy has sparked a broad debate on the influence such gifts may wield.
In response, Indian-origin Labour MP Nadia Whittome expressed disappointment, suggesting Duffield should have lost the whip earlier due to her contentious views on transgender issues.
